Wellington Police are urging drivers to slow down following an alarming increase in motorists exceeding speed limits, particularly over the last week. Among these drivers, three individuals are now facing court after being caught driving at speeds over 150km/h.

Superintendent Corrie Parnell, Wellington District Commander, says the behaviour is reckless and poses serious risks. “Your stopping distance increases dramatically at higher speeds. It’s not just about your driving ability but being able to react if something unexpected happens,” says Parnell.

Police are maintaining a strong presence on roads, targeting high-risk behaviours including speeding, impairment, and distractions. “We make no apology for focusing on these behaviours. The speed limit is a limit, not a guideline,” Parnell says.

Police encourage the public to report dangerous driving, advising people to call 111 for urgent incidents or 105 for non-urgent cases.
