Pink Shirt Day is underway in Porirua this morning, as communities across Aotearoa begin activities focused on standing up against bullying and promoting inclusion, kindness, and diversity.
Led by the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand since 2012, the campaign encourages people to “Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying.” The kaupapa promotes safe and respectful environments for all, regardless of gender identity, sexuality, cultural background, or ability.

Pink Shirt Day originated in Canada in 2007, after two students supported a classmate who was bullied for wearing pink. The movement has since spread internationally and is now a key date on New Zealand’s community calendar.

Funds raised through the campaign support initiatives such as InsideOUT, which provides resources for rainbow youth in schools across the country. Pink Shirt Day also delivers tools to kura and workplaces to help build positive, bullying-free environments.
Events and celebrations are expected across Porirua throughout the day.
