Wairarapa Police have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with a series of arson attacks that targeted six churches and a local business in Masterton on 22 February.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident following a search warrant executed at a Masterton address this morning. He faces seven charges of arson and is scheduled to appear in the Masterton District Court on 19 May.

Wairarapa Area Commander Inspector Nick Thom acknowledged the community’s support throughout the investigation.

“The fires were unsettling and upsetting for many people, and I hope today’s arrest brings some comfort,” Thom said. “Information from the public has played a pivotal role in this investigation and I want to thank everyone who has helped us, including the dedicated investigators who have spent months following leads and making enquiries.”

As the case is now before the court, Police have declined to provide further details.

The fires, which caused significant damage to longstanding places of worship and a local business, had left the Masterton community shaken and prompted widespread concern. Police quickly identified the incidents as suspicious and launched a lengthy investigation.

Residents affected by the fires are now awaiting court proceedings, hopeful that justice and closure are within reach.
