Porirua voters will head to the polls this October to elect a Mayor, City Councillors, and Regional Council representatives, each playing a vital role in shaping the city and the wider Wellington region.
At the heart of the ballot is the Mayor of Porirua, a citywide role that demands vision, leadership, and the ability to bring the community together. The Mayor is tasked with championing a long-term vision for Porirua, steering key decisions on policies, strategies, bylaws, and budgets, and ensuring the Council maintains strong, transparent engagement with residents.
Alongside the mayoral race, voters will choose Councillors from three distinct wards:
- Parirua Māori Ward – 1 position: This dedicated Māori seat ensures that tangata whenua perspectives are represented in Council. The elected Councillor will advocate for the community’s vision and help shape citywide plans while fostering effective engagement with Māori residents.
- Pāuatahanui General Ward – 4 positions: Covering Porirua’s rural and northern communities, these Councillors will work to reflect local aspirations in Council decisions and support sustainable growth in the area.
- Onepoto General Ward – 5 positions: Representing a large portion of urban Porirua, these Councillors will help drive inclusive development, support city services, and champion local voices in the Council chamber.
Beyond Porirua City Council, residents will also elect representatives to the Greater Wellington Regional Council, which oversees regional transport, environmental protection, and flood resilience:
- Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui Māori Constituency – 1 position: This Māori seat ensures iwi and hapū voices are heard at the regional level, supporting the integration of Māori values into strategic planning across the Wellington region.
- Porirua-Tawa Constituency – 2 positions: These Councillors will advocate for Porirua and Tawa interests in regional planning, ensuring investment and policies reflect the needs of local communities.
All elected officials, whether city or regional, will play a role in developing the strategies and budgets that guide everyday services, from road maintenance to waste management, housing developments to climate adaptation.
With nominations opening on 4 July and voting running from 9 September to 11 October, Porirua residents are encouraged to get informed and get involved in shaping the future of their city.
