Long-time local and community advocate Moira Lawler has officially launched her campaign for the Pāuatahanui Ward in the upcoming Porirua City Council elections. Her campaign kick-off event took place on Wednesday, 3 July, at the RSA in Pukerua Bay, where locals were invited to share a cuppa and a kōrero.

Lawler’s campaign focuses on three key priorities: amplifying community voice, advancing environmental action, and ensuring financial sustainability.

“I bring fresh energy, Council experience and strong community connection to the table,” Lawler said. “I’m concerned about the lack of engagement with our Council. We have to do local democracy better.”

In recent weeks, Lawler has been knocking on doors across the ward, listening to residents’ concerns, particularly about large-scale housing developments expected to bring nearly 4000 new homes over the next 10 to 15 years. Common questions centre around infrastructure readiness, environmental impacts, and whether the community will see new schools, parks, public transport, and other essential services.

“People are not against new housing,” Lawler said. “But they feel shut out from decisions that will change the character of their communities. They want clear information and genuine engagement.”

With a background in leading Porirua City Council’s Village Planning programme, Lawler emphasises the value of community expertise and participation in shaping local solutions.

“From housing to climate action, complex issues require local voices and collaborative solutions. We have some challenges ahead – we need all perspectives and voices in the mix.”

Lawler is also calling for a rethink on Council spending and funding priorities. “We’re paying more but getting less,” she said. “Our rates must deliver real value for us and for future generations.”

She advocates for more transparent budgeting and greater resident involvement in setting financial priorities, along with stronger lobbying of central government to contribute fairly to local infrastructure needs.

As the campaign progresses, Lawler says she will continue to explore new ways to connect with voters and understand what matters most to them.
