The Porirua Vikings Valkyrie Women’s Team clinched their fifth consecutive grand final title over the weekend, marking a historic milestone for the club and community.
Their latest victory not only extends a dominant legacy in women’s rugby league but also carried deep emotional weight. The team wore black armbands in tribute to former Viking Jazzy Flava, honouring his memory with a show of unity and respect that moved teammates, supporters, and Flava’s family.
Flava’s father, Solo Luapo, had previously coached the Valkyrie team and worked closely with the club’s junior schoolboys programme, alongside his wife Tee.
A heartfelt message from the club thanked leaders Temz, Marcus, Kyza, Berna, Kat, and Kaewa for their strength both on and off the field.
“Your gesture meant the world to his family and the wider club,” the Vikings said in a statement. “Rest in love, Jazzy. Forever a Viking.”
Among those celebrating the victory was Onepoto ward councillor Geoff Hayward, who shared his reaction online shortly after the match. “I came out of my hui and went straight to Huddy to check the score. I was thrilled to see the end,” Hayward said. “What grit. You make us proud tuahine!”
The team’s continued success and meaningful tribute reflect the powerful community spirit that defines the Porirua Vikings.
Up the Valkyrie.
