Major summer maintenance works are underway on State Highway 1 Transmission Gully, with contractors focusing on improving safety, strengthening drainage and ensuring the long-term reliability of the region’s newest motorway.

Led by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency as part of the Wellington Transport Alliance, the project is targeting sections of the southbound lanes, where crews are addressing areas vulnerable to water damage. Drainage upgrades and trenching are central to the programme, helping to reduce future wear and improve overall resilience.

While lane closures are ongoing near Waitangirua and Battle Hill Farm Park, full directional closures initially planned for November have now been postponed by one week. Updated timing for these closures will be confirmed by Waka Kotahi closer to the new dates.

In the meantime, motorists are advised to expect lane restrictions and possible delays throughout the summer maintenance season. Drivers are encouraged to use State Highway 59 as an alternative route and to allow additional travel time, particularly during weekends and peak periods.

Those who usually enter or exit SH1 via the Waitangirua or SH58 interchanges should be aware that detours via SH59 may be required when full closures resume. Increased traffic is expected along detour routes, particularly through Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast.

Waka Kotahi is reminding all road users to observe posted speed limits and exercise patience around work zones. These upgrades are essential to keeping the highway safe and reliable for the long term.
