A young man is in hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed multiple times in central Wellington early Sunday morning.
Emergency services were called to a carpark between Wakefield Street and Tory Street in Te Aro around 4:10am. The victim, who sustained several stab wounds to his arm and back, was transported to hospital and remains in a stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
Wellington Area Investigations Manager Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said the incident could have ended in tragedy.
“The victim sustained multiple wounds in his back, any of which could have been fatal,” Leitch said. “This could have very easily been a homicide investigation.”
Police believe a large number of people were in the area at the time and are urging anyone with information or footage to come forward.
“What we know is there were a significant number of people in the surrounding area when this happened – we need to hear from these people,” Leitch said. “If you saw any part of what unfolded, we want to hear from you.”
Investigators are pursuing strong leads to identify those responsible. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact Police via 105 or online using the reference number 251130/5482.
