Two Porirua College students are gaining new opportunities thanks to a community initiative helping young people access the technology they need for their education.
Year 11 student Vaisega was recently gifted a laptop through Recycling For Charity after reaching out for support with his schoolwork.
Vaisega said he needed a laptop for his studies and was especially interested in improving his maths skills.
“I didn’t learn how to use a computer in Samoa, so I really need one to practice on,” he said.
He hopes to join the New Zealand Police after finishing college and said he was grateful for the support.
“I want to say a big thank you for giving me this laptop and helping me with my future.”
Another Porirua student, Tusa, also received a laptop to help with study and homework.
Tusa said the device would help with learning English and completing schoolwork.
Tusa’s mother, Faauuga, thanked those involved in providing the technology.
“Your love and support are appreciated for providing laptops for my children to help with their studies,” she said.
The laptops were provided through Recycling For Charity, which refurbishes donated computers and connects them with students, families, charities and others who need access to technology.
The organisation says unwanted laptops and computers can make a significant difference when they are given a second life.
“Every device you donate can help a student, a family in need, or a charity organisation,” the team said.
Recycling For Charity is currently seeking more laptop and computer donations from businesses and organisations wanting to support people in their communities.
The initiative shows how donated technology can become a pathway to education, skills development and future opportunities for local young people.
