Motorists travelling between Porirua and the Hutt Valley face another week of traffic controls on State Highway 58, while separate roadworks are planned for Transmission Gully and State Highway 59 at Pukerua Bay.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi’s latest weekly schedule shows an altered lane layout will remain in place on SH58 between Moonshine Road and Flightys Road throughout the week from Saturday 24 to Friday 30 October.
The changes will apply during the day and overnight as construction continues on the SH58 Safety Improvements project.
From Monday 26 to Thursday 29 October, stop/go traffic management is also scheduled each night between 7pm and 5.30am.
For people travelling between Porirua and Lower Hutt, the controls mean traffic will have to take turns passing through sections of the work site, potentially increasing journey times.
The disruption is part of a larger programme to improve safety along the winding highway connecting the Hutt Valley, Judgeford and Transmission Gully.
The project includes new roundabouts, road and median barriers, drainage improvements and safer facilities for people walking or cycling near key intersections.
The roundabout at Flightys and Murphys roads opened earlier this year, while the new Moonshine Road roundabout became fully operational for traffic in both directions in early September.
However, construction work has continued around the intersections and along adjoining sections of highway.
NZTA says more than 19,000 vehicles use SH58 each day, making it an important connection for residents, workers and businesses travelling between Porirua and the Hutt Valley.
The safety improvements are intended to reduce risks associated with the road’s curves, roadside hazards and intersections while improving journey reliability.
On Transmission Gully, bridge maintenance is scheduled for Wednesday 28 October between Waitangirua and the Takapu Substation.
A southbound lane closure will operate between 9am and 5pm, affecting motorists travelling towards Wellington.
Further north, repairs to sight rails are planned on SH59 at Pukerua Bay, between Pa Road and Pukerua Beach Road.
Stop/go traffic management will be in place on Thursday 29 and Friday 30 October, between 9am and 4pm each day.
Drivers travelling south from Porirua may also encounter traffic controls at the Tawa/Grenada North Interchange.
Line marking is scheduled there on Monday night from 10pm until 5.30am, with stop/go traffic management in place.
The latest weekly notice does not list a full closure of SH58 or Transmission Gully for these works, but motorists should expect temporary restrictions and possible delays.
NZTA says the work is weather-dependent and may be postponed if conditions are unsuitable.
Drivers are advised to plan their journeys, observe temporary speed limits and check current highway conditions before travelling.
