Porirua residents are being urged to secure outdoor belongings and prepare for possible disruptions as severe northwest gales threaten the city overnight and into Tuesday morning.

MetService has issued an Orange Strong Wind Warning covering Porirua and the wider Wellington region until 10am Tuesday 27 October, with gusts of up to 120km/h forecast in exposed places.

The severe winds are associated with a weather front moving north across New Zealand.

MetService warns that the winds could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures, with difficult driving conditions possible, particularly for motorcyclists and high-sided vehicles.

The Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) is advising residents to bring outdoor furniture, wheelie bins and other loose items inside or tie them down securely. Trampolines should also be secured to prevent them being lifted or overturned by strong gusts.

WREMO recommends closing doors and windows, bringing pets indoors and preparing for possible power outages.

Residents should stay indoors during the strongest winds where possible and avoid fallen trees, damaged powerlines and loose debris.

The warning extends into Tuesday’s morning commute, when motorists may face hazardous conditions on exposed roads.

People travelling to work or school are advised to check the latest weather warnings and road conditions before leaving home.
