NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi | 27 Feb 2026 3:21pm | Wellington

Drivers are warned to expect lane closures at Waitangirua in the motorway’s north and southbound lanes until Friday 6 March, weather permitting.

Work crews will be working on the motorway’s southbound shoulder, finishing up drainage repairs on a 70-metre stretch of the road between Monday 2 March, and Wednesday, 4 March 24/7.

Excavations are needed and heavy machinery will be used – so, a lane closure and a 50 km/h temporary speed limit will be in place 24/7 for southbound traffic until this work is finished.

Due to weather delays, the northbound onramp at Waitangirua will continue to be closed this weekend. The onramp will reopen Monday, 2 March morning at 7 am, weather permitting.

Works in the northbound lanes at Waitangirua continue to complete the pavement reconstruction works here. It is expected all northbound lanes will be open by Friday, 6 March, weather permitting.

Drivers are asked to follow all traffic management in place. This is to keep workers and the public safe. Short travel delays can be expected. Consider State Highway 59 during peak travel times.

In the coming weeks, there will also be further chipseal works in north and southbound lanes. This will be done once pavement reconstruction works are complete at Waitangirua. More details will be provided soon.

The New Zealand Professional Firefighters’ Union cancelled a planned one-hour strike set for noon today, citing extreme weather and states of emergency across parts of the North Island.

In a statement this morning, the New Zealand Professional Firefighters’ Union said its national committee made the decision in light of severe weather conditions affecting numerous districts.

States of emergency have been declared in several North Island regions as heavy rain and strong winds continue to cause flooding, slips and damage. Emergency services have been responding to weather-related incidents throughout the weekend.

The union said communication centres and frontline crews had been working hard to support their communities as the extreme weather persists and clean-up efforts begin.

NZPFU National Secretary Wattie Watson said the decision to cancel the strike reflected the current demands on members and the communities they serve.

Wellington District Police are urging people across Porirua and the Hutt Valley to delay travel this evening as heavy rain and strong winds batter the region.

Police say there have been reports of trees down, surface flooding and high winds across the district, creating hazardous driving conditions on local roads.

In a public advisory, Wellington District Police said anyone who must travel should take extreme care.

Drivers are asked to reduce their speed, watch for debris and possible flash flooding, and maintain a longer following distance than usual.

The warning comes as bands of heavy rain move through the wider Wellington region, affecting main routes including State Highway 1 and 2, as well as suburban and rural roads.

Police are reminding residents to check conditions before heading out and to consider postponing non-essential trips until conditions improve.

Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Porirua motorists travelling over Waitangi weekend can expect delays, with multiple roadwork sites operating on State Highways 58 and 59.

The works are scheduled between Friday, February 7, and Thursday, February 13, and are weather dependent, according to an update issued on February 5 by the Wellington Transport Alliance on behalf of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

On State Highway 58 between Judgeford and the Hutt Valley, stop-go traffic controls will be in place overnight from Sunday to Tuesday, between 7pm and 5.30am, as part of the ongoing SH58 project. An altered lane layout will remain in place day and night throughout the week between Moonshine Road and Flightys Road.

On State Highway 59 between Porirua and Kāpiti, a range of works are planned at several locations.

At Paekākāriki, the northbound lane will be closed and the southbound lane altered for weighbridge works between Beach Road and Paekākāriki Link Road on Monday and Friday, from 5am to 5pm.

North of Pukerua Bay rail access, stop-go traffic controls will operate from Monday to Wednesday, between 9.30am and 3.30pm, for a watermain upgrade.

Between Plimmerton Roundabout and Airlie Road, stop-hold traffic controls may be used as required to allow truck access to the railway. This work is scheduled Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm.

At Plimmerton Roundabout, a northbound lane closure is planned overnight from Tuesday to Thursday, between 7pm and 5.30am, for assessment work.

Further south, lane closures in both directions are scheduled on Mana Esplanade between Acheron Road and Marina View on Thursday, from 8am to 4.30pm, for landscaping. Lane closures in both directions are also planned near the Mungavin northbound on-ramp on Tuesday, from 7.30am to 5pm, for reinstatement works.

Northbound lane closures will be in place between the Mungavin Interchange and Linden from Monday to Friday, between 5.30am and 3pm, for wastewater barrier work. Southbound lane closures for slip repairs are scheduled on Thursday and Friday, from 9am to 6pm.

Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time and follow temporary traffic management while travelling through affected areas over the holiday period.

Porirua drivers are being warned to expect night-time road closures, detours and lane restrictions this week as maintenance and upgrade work continues on key state highways.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says work is planned on State Highways 1 and 59 between January 24 and January 30, with all timings weather dependent.

On State Highway 1, Transmission Gully will be closed northbound overnight for chipsealing. The closure runs between Linden and the SH58 interchange on Monday and Tuesday nights from 9pm to 7am. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, the northbound closure extends from Linden to Paekākāriki over the same hours. Traffic will be detoured via State Highway 59.

Southbound traffic on Transmission Gully will also be affected, with overnight closures between Paekākāriki and Linden from Sunday to Tuesday nights, 9pm to 4.30am, for chipsealing.

In addition, southbound lane closures remain in place during the day and night in several locations, including Battle Hill and Waitangirua, for paving, barrier removal and chipseal-related traffic management.

On State Highway 59, the old coastal route through Porirua, the northbound road between the Paekākāriki and MacKay’s interchanges will be closed during the day on Thursday from 8am to 5pm for power pole installation.

In Paekākāriki, drivers can expect altered lane layouts from Monday to Friday, 6.30am to 4pm, for a watermain upgrade. Stop-go traffic controls will also be in place south of Fisherman’s Table on Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 7pm to 4am for sign renewals.

Pukerua Bay motorists will face stop-go controls south of Gray Street on Tuesday night, 7pm to 4am, also for sign renewals.

Closer to Porirua, lane closures are planned at Paremata Roundabout and north of the Whitford Brown interchange on Wednesday night for streetlight pole replacement. The Titahi Bay southbound off-ramp will close briefly early Tuesday morning, from midnight to 3am, for the same work.

Waka Kotahi is urging drivers to allow extra travel time, follow posted detours and traffic management, and check for updates before setting off. All works may be delayed or rescheduled if weather conditions change.

Drivers in Porirua and across the Wellington region are being urged to plan ahead as roadworks continue on key state highways between 13 and 19 December.

NZTA Waka Kotahi has advised that while there are no full closures on SH1 Transmission Gully this week, several lane closures will affect traffic both northbound and southbound. These include daytime work near Flighty’s Road, and closures between Battle Hill and Rainbow Bridge, and south of Waitangirua.

In Ōhau and Kuku, linemarking and tree maintenance will bring overnight stop/go controls and altered lane layouts on SH1 from Tuesday through Thursday. Daytime works are also scheduled for parts of the Kāpiti Expressway, including northbound and southbound closures near Peka Peka, Waikanae, and Raumati.

Meanwhile, SH59 northbound between Paekākāriki and Mackays Crossing will be closed from 6am Monday to 6pm Friday for weigh bridge works. A short Sunday night stop/go control will also be in place in Pukerua Bay for streetlight pole replacement.

On SH58, ongoing works for the safety upgrade project will continue with night-time stop/go controls between Moonshine Road and Flighty’s Road from Sunday to Tuesday. Altered lane layouts will remain in place day and night throughout the week between Judgeford and Transmission Gully.

Porirua residents are urged to plan ahead as roadworks across State Highways 58 and 59, and Transmission Gully are set to cause delays between 28 November and 5 December.

On State Highway 59, the northbound lane between Paekākāriki and Mackays Interchange will be closed from Monday to Thursday, 6am to 6pm, for weighbridge work.
Porirua drivers are in for a week of delays and detours, with extensive roadworks scheduled across the region from 22 to 28 November. The work affects major routes including Transmission Gully, State Highway 1, SH59 through Porirua and Pukerua Bay, and SH58 into the Hutt Valley. All works are weather dependent and subject to change.

Transmission Gully will see both southbound and northbound lane closures day and night for summer maintenance, including stretches from Battle Hill to Rainbow Bridge and Pauatahanui to Waitangirua. Additional southbound work is planned near Waitangirua on Tuesday from 9am to 5pm.

In Tawa, SH1 will be impacted by paving works with night-time lane closures and altered layouts between the Takapu Road off-ramp and Westchester Drive.

Porirua and nearby communities face multiple disruptions on SH59. Teihana Road West in Pukerua Bay will be closed Monday and Tuesday during the day for power pole replacements. Stop/go traffic controls are planned in Paekākāriki and Plimmerton throughout the week for sign renewals, paving, and tree trimming. The Mungavin southbound on-ramp will close Sunday night, and the Titahi Bay southbound off-ramp will shut briefly on Monday night for streetlight work.

State Highway 58 remains under construction for the SH58 upgrade project. Nightly stop/go controls and altered lanes are in place from Judgeford to Transmission Gully. Whitby’s Spinnaker Drive side road remains closed due to a slip.

Drivers are encouraged to check the Waka Kotahi website for real-time updates and consider alternate routes to avoid delays.
