Wellington Police are appealing for information following a disturbing assault.

Wellington Police are appealing for information following a disturbing assault on a woman in Newtown early this morning.

The incident occurred around 7:30am on Colombo Street, where a woman was approached from behind by a man armed with a knife. When she turned to face him, the man confronted her, prompting the victim to flee to a nearby address where she contacted Police.

Detective Inspector Haley Ryan of the Wellington District CIB said the victim was “understandably extremely shaken,” though not physically injured. “Police are offering support to the victim, after what was a deeply concerning incident,” Ryan said.

In response, Police are increasing their presence in the Newtown area to reassure the community and continue investigations.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, about 5’7” (170cm) tall, with a medium build. He was reportedly wearing a grey jumper over a red hoodie, grey pants, and a hospital-style face mask.

Police are asking for help from anyone who may have been in the area of Colombo Street, Rintoul Street, Adelaide Road, or Riddiford Street between 7am and 8am and might have seen the man or captured him on CCTV or dashcam.

“This male is probably a local resident and someone in our community may recognise the description provided by the victim,” Ryan said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Police via 105, referencing event number 250622/1969. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.

“We’d also like to remind people to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to Police – call 111 if it’s happening now, or 105 after the fact,” Ryan added.
