Police have launched an investigation after human remains were discovered in a residential garden in Ōwhiro Bay on Sunday, 22 June.

A homeowner alerted authorities on Monday afternoon after unearthing the remains while working in his yard. Police confirmed the remains are human, and forensic enquiries are now underway to determine their age and identity.

Detective Senior Sergeant Lee Underhill of Wellington CIB said the formal identification process could take some time.

“An investigation is underway following the discovery of human remains at an address in Ōwhiro Bay. Our enquiries will look to determine how old these remains are, followed by a formal identification process,” Underhill said.
