Porirua’s local elections are approaching, and for those considering a run for office, now is the time to step forward. Nominations open on Friday, 4 July 2025, giving aspiring candidates the opportunity to represent their community and help shape the city’s future.
Who Can Stand?
You don’t need any special qualifications to become a candidate. To be eligible, you must be:
- At least 18 years old
- A New Zealand citizen
- Enrolled to vote
That’s it, no previous experience required, just a commitment to serving your community.
How to Get Nominated
To stand for Mayor or Councillor, you’ll need to:
- Decide which role you want to run for.
- Get two nominators who are enrolled voters in the ward you’re standing in.
- Complete the official nomination form.
- Submit your form and $200 deposit per role before 12pm on Friday, 1 August 2025.
You can also submit a recent photo and a 150-word statement to appear in the official election booklet. While optional, these additions are strongly encouraged to help voters get to know you.
Nomination forms are available online, at the Council’s administration building, and at local libraries. Detailed guidance can be found in the 2025 Candidates Handbook, available in PDF format on the Council’s website.
Candidate Information Sessions
To support potential candidates, Porirua City Council is hosting two public information sessions:
- Saturday, 12 July 2025, 10–11am at the Helen Smith Room, Pātaka
- Monday, 14 July 2025, 7–8pm at the same venue, Pātaka.
These sessions will cover the nomination process, what it’s like to be an elected member, and allow time for questions.
Whether you’re driven by a passion for local issues, want to advocate for your community, or are simply curious about the process, now’s the time to learn more and consider putting your name forward. It’s your city, why not help lead it?
