Drivers in Porirua and those travelling north and south through the city are being advised to plan ahead, with a series of state highway closures and lane restrictions scheduled over the Christmas and New Year period.
According to NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi and the Wellington Transport Alliance, roadworks will run across parts of State Highway 1 and State Highway 58 between December 20 and January 9, weather permitting.
There will be no works on SH1 Transmission Gully until early January, but several night-time closures and lane restrictions are planned once work resumes.

Northbound closures
- Linden to Paekākāriki: Monday, January 5, 9pm–4.30am
- Linden to SH58 Pāuatahanui: Tuesday, January 6 to Thursday, January 8, 9pm–4.30am
Northbound lane closures
- Rainbow Bridge: from 7pm, Tuesday, January 6, day and night ongoing
- Waitangirua Interchange: from 6am, Tuesday, January 6, day and night ongoing
Southbound closures
- Paekākāriki to SH58 Pāuatahanui Interchange: Tuesday, January 6 to Thursday, January 8, 9pm–4.30am
- SH58 Pāuatahanui Interchange to Linden: Friday, January 9, 9pm–4.30am
Southbound lane closures
- South of Wainui Saddle: Wednesday, January 7 to Friday, January 9, 6am–6pm
- Battle Hill: from 6am, Friday, January 9, day and night ongoing
- Rainbow Bridge: Monday, January 5, 7pm–6am
State Highway 1, Ngauranga Interchange
- Northbound on-ramp closed: Monday, January 5, 9pm–4.30am
- Southbound off-ramp closed: Tuesday, January 6, 9pm–4.30am
State Highway 59, Porirua to Kāpiti
- No high-risk roadworks are scheduled during this period.
State Highway 58, Porirua to Hutt Valley
- Judgeford, Moonshine Rd to Flighty’s Rd: Saturday, December 20 to Friday, January 9, day and night
- Altered lane layout in place as part of the SH58 project.
NZTA says all work is weather dependent and may be postponed or rescheduled. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, follow temporary traffic management and check for updates before heading out, particularly during night travel.
