Work is under way in Kenepuru on a major electricity network upgrade designed to improve the reliability of power supplies across Porirua.
Wellington Electricity is installing new underground cables between Kenepuru and Whittaker’s as part of a project expected to continue until November.
Civil works are currently progressing along Kenepuru Drive, with trenching under way and traffic management in place.
Work is also moving towards Raiha Street, while electrical installation work is being planned.
Wellington Electricity says no power outages are planned or expected as part of the project.
The upgrade includes new underground ducts and electricity cables, new switchgear and transformer equipment, and connections into the existing electricity network.
Wellington Electricity says the additional infrastructure will help balance electricity demand across the local network, improve reliability and reduce the risk and impact of future power interruptions.
Work will affect parts of Kenepuru Drive, Raiha Street and Mohuia Crescent.
Drivers can expect traffic management, including stop/go controls where required, although contractors are aiming to keep disruption to a minimum.
Current trenching on Kenepuru Drive includes work around the roundabout, with excavations also planned within the nearby gravel area to reduce the amount of traffic management required on the road.
Property owners may also be contacted where electricity infrastructure is located on private land and access is required.
Some vegetation may need to be trimmed where it is too close to electricity infrastructure.
The project is being managed by Wellington Electricity, with PCL Contracting carrying out civil works and Omexom preparing for cable and electrical equipment installation.
Wellington Electricity is targeting completion of the project in November 2026.
