Police enforcement, advertising and road safety education will target speeding in Porirua during October and November, following 176 speed-related crashes in the region over the past five years.

Fourteen of those crashes were serious.

Porirua City Council, New Zealand Police and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi are working together on the Better Together campaign to encourage drivers to stay within the speed limit.

The campaign combines reminders about the consequences of speeding with police enforcement on local roads.

Wellington District road policing manager Inspector Shaun Lingard said drivers should expect enforcement at any time.

“Everyone should expect police to enforce anytime, anywhere on our roads. There’s no excuse for speeding.”

Council transport manager Julian Emeny said speeding put drivers, their passengers and other road users at risk.

The council said speed affects how severe a crash becomes, even when it is not the cause.

Drivers are being urged to treat the posted speed as a limit and adjust their driving to keep themselves and others safe.
