Five candidates will contest the upcoming Onepoto General Ward by-election for a seat on Porirua City Council.

Nominations closed at midday on Thursday, with Joanne Dow, Caroline Mareko, Zac Painting, Siobhan Samuel and Jess Te Huia confirmed as candidates.

The by-election follows the sudden death of Onepoto Ward councillor Mike Duncan.

Porirua Deputy Electoral Officer Jack Marshall said voters would now decide who would represent the ward around the council table.

“Local government is in a time of great change. The new Councillor will take part in critical decisions for the future of our city,” Marshall said.

Candidate profiles are expected to be published on the Porirua City Council website, along with further information for voters.

People who live in the Onepoto General Ward and are enrolled on the General Electoral Roll are eligible to vote.

Residents who enrol after nominations closed will still be able to vote, but will need to cast a special vote.

Voting papers are due to start arriving from September 14.

Completed voting papers must be received by the Electoral Officer by noon on Friday, October 16.

The council says further information about voting locations and the special voting process will be released in the coming weeks.
