The by-election will fill the seat left vacant following the death of councillor Mike Duncan in June. Five candidates are contesting the position, with the successful candidate joining Porirua City Council for the remainder of the 2025–2028 term.
With just days remaining, voters are encouraged to return their completed papers using one of the orange voting boxes located around the ward, rather than risk postal delays.
Porirua City Council provided 19 voting boxes when voting opened, including locations at supermarkets and libraries.
All completed ballot papers must reach the electoral officer by 12 noon on Friday. Posting a ballot paper before the deadline does not guarantee it will arrive in time to be counted.
Voting papers began arriving in letterboxes on 14 September.
The by-election uses the Single Transferable Vote system, which allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference.
Residents registered on the General Electoral Roll within the Onepoto General Ward are eligible to vote.
Anyone who has not received their voting papers, or who needs to enrol, can check their details at vote.nz and contact the council’s elections team at [email protected] to arrange a special vote.
Further voting information is available on the Porirua City Council website.
Porirua News has previously published the profiles and statements of all five candidates standing in the by-election.
