A mild earthquake struck north-west of Porirua just after midnight on Wednesday, briefly shaking the area but causing no reports of damage or injury.

The quake, which occurred at 12:19am on 25 June, registered a magnitude of 3.5 and was centred about 30 kilometres north-west of Porirua at a depth of 45 kilometres. The shaking lasted approximately 58 seconds, according to initial seismic readings.

Residents across the wider Wellington region, including Porirua, reported feeling a short jolt or rumble. Despite the tremor being widely felt, local authorities have not issued any emergency alerts, and there are no indications of infrastructure damage or service disruptions.

Events of this magnitude are common in New Zealand, particularly in seismically active areas like the lower North Island. Civil Defence continues to monitor the situation, and residents are reminded of the importance of being prepared for future earthquakes.
