Passengers across the Wellington region are being urged to plan ahead and expect delays over the Matariki long weekend, as KiwiRail undertakes significant rail infrastructure work from Friday 20 June to Sunday 22 June.
Train services will be suspended on most lines during this period, with buses replacing trains across the network. The Wairarapa Line is the only exception, where trains will continue running between Masterton and Upper Hutt. Full rail services are scheduled to resume on the morning of Monday 23 June.
KiwiRail’s planned upgrades include track and formation work, seawall strengthening, and progress on the Te Ara Tupua cycleway. These projects build on recent safety improvements at level crossings and ongoing maintenance aimed at enhancing long-term reliability.
Following the upgrade period, passengers may experience delays for two to three days as the newly worked tracks settle and normal service resumes.
