The south end of Aotea Lagoon has officially reopened following a dawn blessing held on Wednesday, 18 June. The revitalised space marks the completion of a major upgrade by Porirua City Council, aimed at transforming the popular lakeside reserve into a safer, more welcoming area for community events and everyday use.
Mayor Anita Baker, Deputy Mayor Kylie Wihapi, councillors Ross Leggett and Kathleen Filo, along with Rotary Porirua members, council staff and contractor JFC Ltd, attended the ceremony.

“It’s a safe, open space with a stage locals can use, plus brand-new accessible toilets,” said Mayor Baker. “Shade sails will soon be installed to complete the seating area.”
What’s New
The redevelopment includes a newly shaped events lawn supported by terrace walls and a raised stage, forming a natural amphitheatre for performances and gatherings. A boardwalk and widened gravel pathways now connect the site to the miniature railway, improving access for all visitors.
Two Exceloo toilet units have replaced the outdated 1980s block, which will be demolished. The site also features upgraded storm-water and sewer systems, alongside native grass plantings designed to improve resilience in heavy weather.

A Community Effort with Deep Roots
As part of the project, Rotary Porirua volunteers salvaged over 4,000 bricks and around 150 rose bushes during demolition. The bricks were sold to raise funds for local schools and community initiatives.
Many of the rose bushes found a new home at the RSA section of Whenua Tapu Cemetery, providing a meaningful continuation for the flowers that once lined the lagoon’s garden beds.
What’s Next
Installation of a shade canopy over the seating area is scheduled in the coming weeks. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to visit the upgraded lawn and enjoy the renewed waterfront space.
