Porirua is set to celebrate the Pacific even more vibrantly in 2025, with Bislama, Vanuatu’s official language, joining the roster of Pacific Language Weeks recognised throughout the city.
Pacific Language Weeks are an annual tradition in Porirua, showcasing the richness of languages, cultures and identities that make up nearly 27 percent of the city’s population. In 2025, the celebration will begin with Rotuman Language Week from 11–17 May and continue through to Solomon Islands Language Week in late November.
The 2025 theme, Preserving Pacific Languages for the Future, echoes global concerns about language loss. With 40 percent of the world’s 7,000 languages endangered, according to the United Nations, these weeks serve as an important platform for cultural preservation.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker said the language celebrations strengthen community connections and uphold the city’s cultural strategy, Ola Kamataga – Beginning of Life.
“It’s well-known that Porirua is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the country, and I love that we highlight and celebrate that,” Baker said.
“To see people, young and old and everywhere in between, getting out and learning and developing relationships in our community brings us all closer together.”
Council-led events, including flag-raisings and community gatherings, will take place during each language week. Specific themes and event details will be announced closer to each celebration, and updates will be shared on the Porirua City Council’s website and social media platforms.
