A new community initiative, E Kai, has officially opened its doors in Porirua, offering warm meals and a welcoming space to those in need. The soup kitchen, a collaboration between Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira’s Hei Oranga Ake, WELLfed, and Porirua City Council, aims to address food insecurity while fostering connection and whanaungatanga.

The opening ceremony took place on Monday, 26 May at Hei Oranga Ake, drawing community members, leaders, and partners to celebrate the launch of this kaupapa. More than just a place for food, E Kai represents a broader commitment to manaakitanga — extending care and support to the entire community.

Situated within Hei Oranga Ake, a hub for community health services, the soup kitchen is guided by the Mauriora model of care, where any door is the right door. Guests arriving for a meal are welcomed into a holistic, culturally grounded environment that offers more than nourishment.

WELLfed contributes its experience in food preparation and volunteer coordination, while Porirua City Council provides essential support to ensure the programme’s success. Meals are prepared and served by volunteers and TOA – Te Roopu Awhina staff, creating a space where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
E Kai operates every Monday from 5pm to 7pm, 4 Lydney Place in Porirua, between 5pm and 7pm. All are welcome — no questions asked.
