Council launch grants to promote sustainability in Porirua

A new grant scheme aimed at reducing waste and promoting sustainability was approved by Porirua City Council at its meeting this morning, marking a major step in local efforts to support a circular economy.

Starting in the 2025/26 financial year, the pilot scheme will offer community grants for projects that encourage reuse, repurposing, and recycling across the city. The initiative is funded by the Waste Levy Subsidy and aligns with the city’s 2023–2029 Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.

The 12-month pilot will provide two funding tiers: grants of up to $30,000 through a single application round and smaller grants of up to $2,000 available year-round.

“This scheme will empower communities in the city,” said Councillor Geoff Hayward, Porirua’s representative on the Wellington Region Waste Management and Minimisation Joint Committee. “It’s backing communities to lead solutions using existing levers wisely.”

Hayward noted the initiative aims to lessen the burden on ratepayers and help reduce landfill waste. Projects that reduce waste at the source or promote reduction, redesign, reuse, repair, or repurposing will be considered.

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker praised the move as a proactive step for environmental stewardship.

“This is another way that we can work towards making our communities more healthy and encourage more people to get involved in positive outcomes,” she said.

Details on how to apply for the grants will be released once the scheme’s framework is finalised.
