Two Porirua locals have been celebrated on this year’s King’s Birthday Honours list for their outstanding contributions to Aotearoa New Zealand.

Simon Strombom, known for his deep commitment to preserving New Zealand’s military history, has been appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM). For decades, Strombom has led efforts to honour local servicemen and women, ensuring their stories are remembered through memorial projects, community education, and ANZAC commemorations. His work has helped maintain a strong tradition of remembrance across Porirua and beyond.

Meanwhile, Murray Mexted, a household name in New Zealand rugby and a proud son of Tawa, has been appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to the sport. Mexted, who grew up next to the Tawa Rugby Club and attended Tawa College, played 34 tests for the All Blacks between 1979 and 1985. After retiring from the game, he became a respected commentator and established the International Rugby Academy of New Zealand, mentoring over 100 future internationals.

Both men exemplify the impact local leadership can have on the national stage. Porirua News congratulates them for their well-deserved recognition.
