Porirua’s Samoan community came together in unprecedented numbers on the morning of June 1 for a flag-raising ceremony that launched Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa – Samoa Language Week 2025.
The event, held at Central Pacific Collective, featured a significant community presence, with many gathering to honour Samoan heritage, language, and unity. Porirua Mayor Anita Baker and Councillors Kathleen Filo and Geoff Hayward were in attendance, joined by His Excellency Afamasaga, the High Commissioner of Samoa. Also present were community leaders; Kaumatua Dr Taku Parai, and Chief Executive Helmut Modlik from Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira. Labour MP for Mana, Barbara Edmonds also joined the celebration.

Reverend So’osemea Faatui from PIC Porirua – Christ the King Church opened the event with a heartfelt devotion. His congregation offered a moving performance of song and dance that celebrated Samoan spirituality and artistry.
Chief Tino Pereira spoke at the ceremony and was honoured with raising the Samoan flag, symbolising pride and visibility for Porirua’s vibrant Samoan population.
This year’s Language Week theme, “Ia malu lou sā. Folau i lagimā – A well-grounded self, is a successful self”, draws a powerful metaphor between a well-crafted ocean vessel and a person equipped with inner strength and purpose.

The Samoa Language Week Committee explained: “A strong, thoughtfully built vaka ensures a steady voyage. In the same way, a grounded person, prepared with care and intention, can face life’s challenges with resilience.”
Schools such as Whitby Collegiate, Rangikura School, and Bishop Viard College are taking part in this cultural celebration, helping younger generations connect with their heritage.

Samoa Language Week runs from 1–7 June, with resources, posters, and event updates available online. A full video of the flag-raising ceremony can be viewed here below.
