Tairangi School has wrapped up a vibrant Term 2 with a powerful trio of events celebrating culture, achievement, and community spirit.

Students and staff marked Gagana Samoa – Samoan Language Week with heartfelt performances, sharing the beauty of the Samoan language and traditions through song and dance. The week was themed “Tautua i le alofa, manuia le lumana’i” – “Serve in love for a blessed future”, and brought the school community together for a shared celebration of service, kindness, and cultural pride.

Adding to the month’s celebrations, the school travelled to Te Rauparaha Arena to experience an immersive Matariki presentation hosted by Porirua City Council in partnership with Ngāti Toa Rangatira. Students were captivated by glow-in-the-dark poi, a beautifully carved waharoa, and wide-screen visuals that even featured the students themselves.

“This was a truly uplifting experience,” said a school spokesperson. “We’re so grateful for the opportunity to celebrate Matariki in such a meaningful way.”

The term concluded with the Ake Runga Assembly, where classes shared highlights from Samoan Language Week and celebrated student achievements. Recipients of the Ake Runga awards were recognised for their dedication and progress, while a new initiative celebrated students with 90.1% to 100% attendance — capped off with a meat pack draw won by Manawa’s whānau.

“Thank you to all our whānau and friends for your support,” the school shared. “These moments remind us of the strength and unity within our community.”
