Locals are invited to celebrate two decades of conservation work at Whitireia Park with a special planting event and BBQ on Sunday 20 July, starting at 9.30am at Onehunga Bay carpark.
The Whitireia Park Restoration Group, established in 2005, is hosting the event to mark 20 years of dedicated volunteer efforts to rejuvenate the natural beauty of the park. This year’s planting will focus on an area affected by last summer’s fires, located just a five-minute walk from the carpark, over the saddle of Onehunga Valley.
“We’re really proud of what’s been achieved over the past 20 years,” said Jordan Clear, a coordinator for the group. “This celebration is a way for the community to come together, reflect on the progress, and keep the momentum going.”

The planting site includes areas suitable for children and less-abled participants. A free BBQ will be held at midday, and attendees can view a display showcasing the restoration work carried out over the years.
Participants are encouraged to wear warm clothes and bring their own gloves and spades, although some will be provided. In the event of bad weather, a postponement notice will be posted to the group’s Facebook page by 8am. The rain date is Sunday 27 July.
To help with catering, attendees are asked to RSVP to Jordan Clear at [email protected].
