Mana’s Trevor Farmer nominated for National Leadership award

Trevor Farmer, finalist for the 2025 Coastguard Outstanding Leadership Award, has dedicated more than three decades to emergency response and volunteer training in Porirua and beyond.

Mana’s Trevor Farmer has been named a finalist for the 2025 Coastguard Volunteer Awards of Excellence, recognising his exceptional leadership and long-standing service in marine rescue and emergency management.

Farmer, has been nominated for the Outstanding Leadership Award, celebrating his decades of commitment to community safety and volunteer training. Coastguard Tautiaki Moana announced the finalists this week, honouring volunteers from across the country who dedicate their time and expertise to keeping people safe on the water.

“These awards are about recognising the incredible people who give their time, energy, and expertise to help others,” said Carl McOnie, Chief Executive of Coastguard. “Whether they are out on the water or working behind the scenes, our volunteers sacrifice time with their loved ones to ensure others get safely home to theirs.”

Farmer brings over 36 years of operational experience across policing, the army, insurance, emergency management, and marine search and rescue. He served as a senior emergency management adviser for the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office and acted as a Civil Defence controller for Porirua City Council.

A passionate trainer and mentor, Farmer has led the development of regional Emergency Operations Centre training programmes, helping shape national standards through practical, learner-driven approaches. His efforts have supported a consistent use of the Coordinated Incident Management System across the region.

The winners of the Coastguard Awards of Excellence will be announced on 22 September.
