Porirua Women take Centre Field in Rugby Comedy Premiere

Four women dressed in rugby uniforms act out a scene in a clubroom setting, with one holding a rugby ball and others engaged in dramatic play, while a man in a referee shirt looks on from the background.

Porirua Little Theatre has kicked off its latest production with a bold twist on the traditional rugby narrative, opening Pack of Girls to local audiences this week. Written by Kiwi playwright David Geary, the comedy follows Pam, a rural woman who turns her frustrations with her rugby-mad husband into a hilarious journey of self-discovery and sport.

Set in a small New Zealand town, the play sees Pam rally a group of women to form their own rugby team, the Hurridames, in an effort to challenge the local men’s side and reclaim some balance in their lives. With themes of empowerment, humour, and community spirit, Pack of Girls dives into gender roles and rural life with wit and heart.

Theatre organisers say audiences can expect big laughs, relatable moments, and a story that resonates deeply with the local crowd.

“This show is for everyone who’s ever felt sidelined or underestimated,” said a spokesperson for Porirua Little Theatre. “It’s a celebration of friendship, resilience, and the unexpected power of saying ‘yes’ to something new.”
