Old materials, new life: Scooter track opens at Ngāti Toa Domain

The new scooter track at Ngāti Toa Domain, created using recycled paint and repurposed road signs by Porirua City Council’s maintenance team.

An under-used pathway in Paremata has been transformed into a colourful scooter track, giving new life to old materials and creating a fresh play space for local tamariki.

The circular path, which previously surrounded a playground at Ngāti Toa Domain, has been repurposed by the Porirua City Council’s maintenance team using leftover paint and recycled road signs from earlier projects.

“We are always looking for ways to enhance children’s play, so when the idea came up to transform this unused space, we decided to roll with it,” said Charmaine, Manager of Maintenance and Litter Services.

The vibrant track was painted with surplus paint from the Waitangirua Park project and fitted with road signs that had been stored from other scooter parks across the city.

Charmaine said the transformation was part of the team’s broader goal to revitalise community spaces with a bit of creativity and care.

“Whether people are taking a shortcut to the beach, playing tennis, or enjoying the swings, there’s now a vibrant, playful space for everyone to enjoy, and still plenty of green space left for a picnic,” she said.

Locals are encouraged to bring their scooters and check out the colourful addition next time they’re in the area.
