Porirua families are invited to a free open day at Queen Elizabeth Park on February 21 to help mark 25 years of Greater Wellington summer events.

A free family open day at Queen Elizabeth Park will celebrate 25 years of Greater Wellington summer events on Saturday, February 21.

Running from 11am to 3pm, the event invites Porirua and Kāpiti Coast families to enjoy a full day of activities beside Whareroa Beach, with free entry for all ages.

Hosted by Greater Wellington, the open day will feature free historic tram rides through the park, face painting and craft activities for tamariki, and live performances from Fairy Cat and her fairy friends.

An artisan craft market and food trucks will operate throughout the day, while the Kāpiti Aeromodellers will showcase model aircraft with flying demonstrations over the park.

Pony rides will also be available at $10 per ride, with cash only accepted.

Greater Wellington said the event is part of its long-running summer programme aimed at helping families connect with nature and spend time together outdoors.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic, relax by the beach and explore the park’s walking tracks. Information will also be available on the park’s history, including its use as a World War II U.S. Marines camp, and its ongoing wetland restoration and conservation work.

Queen Elizabeth Park is one of the region’s largest coastal parks and plays a key role in protecting wetlands and freshwater, restoring native habitats and preserving historic sites, supported by mana whenua, volunteers and community partners.

The open day takes place on Saturday, February 21, from 11am to 3pm at Queen Elizabeth Park. Entry is free.
