Porirua City Council says it is continuing to prioritise young people across the city, with a new report outlining initiatives and programmes supporting tamariki and rangatahi.
The report was presented to the council’s Te Puna Kōrero Committee and reviews progress under the city’s Tamariki and Rangatahi Strategy, a strategic priority for Porirua since 2018. A refreshed version of the strategy was adopted in 2024.
The report outlines five focus areas aimed at improving opportunities, wellbeing and participation for young people across the community.
Several initiatives already underway in Porirua were highlighted.
The annual Careers Expo connects rangatahi with local employers, training providers and career pathways to help prepare them for future employment.
Council’s Mahi Rangatahi programme offers in-house work experience placements that provide mentorship and practical skills development.
Through the Young Peoples Fund, rangatahi can apply for funding to support projects they design and lead in their communities.
The Mau Te Rongo programme also continues to operate, with navigators maintaining a visible presence at Porirua Railway Station and other locations around the city to help create safe and welcoming spaces for young people.
Council staff and partner organisations are also receiving Mana Taiohi and Inside Out training to better understand and respond to the needs of the city’s diverse youth population.
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker said the council remains committed to ensuring young people are at the centre of planning and decision-making.
“We’re committed to putting our tamariki and rangatahi at the heart of everything we do. This report is a testament to our city’s vision, where every child and young person feels valued, listened to and empowered to shape their future,” Baker said.
“Our youth have told us what matters most to them, and we’ve listened. By working together as a community, we are creating pathways for success and wellbeing for all Porirua’s young people.”
