Election Day is set for 12 October 2025, with final results expected by 17 October. Porirua residents will vote for key leadership roles that shape the city’s future.
Porirua locals will head to the polls this October to elect their mayor, city councillors, and representatives for local boards and regional councils. Nominations open on 4 July and close at 12 noon on 1 August. Voters will decide on roles including Mayor, ward and at-large councillors, and regional council representatives. Licensing trusts and district health board members may also be included, depending on eligibility and location.
What’s New in 2025
Candidate nominations are underway, with forms available online, at the Council’s administration building, and at local libraries. There have been no announced changes to ward boundaries or voting systems at this time. Low voter turnout in previous elections has prompted reminders of the importance of local democracy. Electoral officers continue to emphasise informed participation and early engagement.
Key Issues in Porirua
Prominent issues expected to shape the 2025 campaign include housing intensification and affordability, council rates and financial transparency, youth services and public safety, transport reliability and infrastructure, and water reform and resilience (Three Waters). These topics have been recurring themes in past council meetings and local consultations.

This is a postal vote, voting papers will be mailed out in mid-September and must be returned by post or delivered to official ballot boxes by the deadline.
