The Cancer Society has opened the doors to a new, expanded hub in the heart of Porirua, aiming to better support whānau affected by cancer across the region.

On Thursday 26 June, the organisation officially moved from its long-time Hagley Street site into a purpose-fitted space on Level 4 of North City shopping centre. The opening was marked with a blessing led by Ngāti Toa kaumātua Hohepa Potini, warmly known as Uncle Hep, and attended by staff, supporters, and community members.

Jenni Drew, General Manager Cancer Services for Cancer Society Wellington, said the move reflects the growing demand for support services in the region.

“This new hub will allow us to provide a wider range of support services – including counselling, support groups, transport to treatment, and access to practical resources for the wider Porirua community,” Drew said.

“It’s a place where people facing cancer can feel supported, cared for and connected. It was beautiful to look around the room at our open day and see everyone connecting – it really shows what the hub is all about.”

With more space for whānau, kai, kōrero and care, the team is looking forward to welcoming more people through the doors.

The Porirua Hub is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 3.30pm. The community can reach the team via email at [email protected] or by calling 0800 CANCER (0800 226 237).
