Rise Up rally to Spotlight Women’s pay equity in Porirua

Women and allies will gather at Te Rauparaha Arena Park on 20 September to demand pay equity and workplace dignity during the Rise Up! Women’s National Day of Action.

Porirua will join the nationwide call for fairness in pay with a women-led rally at Te Rauparaha Arena Park on Saturday 20 September, from 10am to 12pm.

Organised by Working Women United in solidarity with the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, the Rise Up! Women’s National Day of Action aims to raise awareness of the Government’s recent decision to cancel 33 pay equity claims. The affected claims span a range of female-dominated professions, including teaching, nursing, social work, and early childhood education.

“This is about fairness, dignity, and equality for women, families, and communities,” organisers said in a statement. “We’re coming together to say that the work women do must be recognised and respected.”

The event will feature community leaders, union advocates, and local champions sharing stories of strength and service. Attendees can expect music, live performances, talanoa sessions, a community sausage sizzle, and a unity stance to close the morning.

Participants are encouraged to wear or carry something purple, green, or white to symbolise solidarity in the fight for pay equity.
