New variable 30km/h speed limit signs are being installed outside schools across Porirua to improve safety for tamariki and rangatahi travelling to and from school.
Porirua City Council said the new signs will apply on roads outside school gates, with the reduced speed limit covering about 150 metres on either side of each entrance. Installation is on track to be completed in early August.
The council has worked with schools and local communities to identify the roads where the variable limits will apply and to set the times when the lower speed limit will be in force.
Static variable signs are being installed outside each school, showing the specific times when drivers must slow to 30km/h.
The changes are designed to improve safety during busy school travel periods, when students are arriving at and leaving school.
