One of Porirua’s established car dealerships has entered a new chapter, with Johnston Ebbett becoming Johnston Motors following a change in ownership that brings two new Wellington business partners into the company.
Managing director David Johnston, who previously held a 25 per cent shareholding in Johnston Ebbett, has increased his ownership stake and joined forces with two local investors to take the business forward.
For Johnston, the change represents an opportunity to build on more than a decade of automotive experience in the Wellington region while strengthening the company’s local connections.
“I’ve been involved with the business for many years and have always been incredibly proud of what we’ve built together,” he said.
“With that change in ownership comes a new name, Johnston Motors. It reflects where we are heading while still recognising the history and strong foundations of the business.”
The two new partners have strong connections to Wellington’s business community and share Johnston’s vision for the company’s future.
Johnston believes local ownership brings important advantages, particularly when it comes to understanding customers and maintaining relationships throughout the region.
“We live and work in the communities we serve, so we have a genuine understanding of the relationships we have with our customers, our people, our suppliers, and our wider business community.”
The business began operating in central Wellington in 2013 before expanding into Porirua in 2020.
In 2024, the company consolidated its Wellington CBD operations into its larger Porirua dealership, bringing its teams and services together at 2 John Seddon Drive.
Despite the new name and ownership structure, Johnston says customers can expect business as usual.
“Customers will continue to deal with the same familiar people, have access to the same brands and vehicles, and receive the same level of service and support they’ve come to expect from us.”
Johnston Motors represents Kia, BYD and GMSV, alongside a range of used vehicles. The dealership also provides servicing, maintenance, parts and vehicle repairs, including authorised Holden servicing.
Johnston says the company’s focus extends well beyond selling vehicles, with an emphasis on supporting customers throughout the lifetime of their vehicle ownership.
He is particularly enthusiastic about the changing automotive industry and the opportunities presented by electric vehicles and new hybrid technology.
“The automotive industry is changing quickly, particularly with new brands, electrification, and changing customer expectations. I’m excited about how we can embrace those changes while still maintaining the personal approach that has always been important to us.”
While further investment and growth are priorities, Johnston says the company’s greatest strength remains its people.
“You can have great products and facilities, but it’s the people who create the experience.”
For Johnston, the new name signals a fresh beginning without abandoning the relationships and values that have helped establish the business in Wellington and Porirua.
“We’re not looking to change what makes the business successful. We want to build on it and take it forward.”
