Pīwakawaka brighten up Whitby and Aotea

A completed Chorus cabinet in Aotea.

Artist Helen Bland last week added to the collection of colourful Chorus cabinets around Porirua City by painting a beautiful Pīwakawaka/Fantail mural on cabinets in Whitby and Aotea

The cabinets, located on James Cook Dr and Te Puia Dr are two of seven cabinets receiving murals this summer as part of an ongoing partnership between Chorus NZ, Porirua City Council and local residents’ associations to brighten up the city’s streetscapes.

The murals are funded by Chorus, with Council and relevant residents’ associations providing support.

These murals bring beautiful works of art to our streets while also reducing the likelihood of the cabinet being tagged.

Helen’s pīwakawaka designs were chosen by the Whitby and Aotea residents’ associations to adorn the cabinets in their neighbourhoods.

Other streets receiving Chorus cabinet makeovers this summer include:

  • Parumoana St, CBD
  • Te Hiko St, Takapūwāhia
  • Grays Rd, Plimmerton
  • Station Rd, Paremata
  • Gloaming Hill, Titahi Bay.
