The Pōneke Football Club is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished members, Des Kinsella, who passed away this week at the age of 96.

Kinsella, Pōneke’s oldest living life member, was a pillar of the club, contributing 76 years of dedication and spirit to the Red and Black. Born in 1929, he joined the club at age 20 and never looked back, serving as a player, coach, Club Captain, and lifelong supporter.

Known for his grit as a prop in the Senior A team, Kinsella played alongside some of the club’s greats and under the guidance of legendary coach Vic Calcinai. Off the field, his leadership and loyalty made a lasting impression on generations of players and supporters.

Even in his later years at Waikanae Lodge, Kinsella remained a proud representative of the club, often seen in his Pōneke jersey, cap, and scarf.

“Des, we thank you for everything. Your legacy lives on in every ruck, every scrum, and every gathering of the Pōneke whānau,” the club said in a heartfelt tribute.

A celebration of Kinsella’s life will be held at 1pm on Friday at the Paraparaumu Boating Club.
