Porirua residents will have the chance to clear out old electronics responsibly during the upcoming Electronic Waste Drop-Off Day, hosted by Echo Tech NZ. The event will take place this Saturday 17 May, in the carpark of Elim Christian Centre, located at 11 Heriot Drive, from 10am to 4pm.
Organisers have set up a convenient drive-through system, with staff available to unload items directly from vehicles. The event is part of the nationwide e-days initiative, promoting safe and sustainable electronic waste disposal.
Many items can be recycled free of charge, including computers, monitors, laptops, tablets, mobile phones, routers, car batteries, and stereo equipment. However, some items will incur a fee to help cover recycling costs. These include:
- Fluorescent tubes: $2 each
- Media players, keyboards, toner cartridges: $3 each
- Mixed batteries: $5 per kilogram
- Small appliances such as microwaves and heaters: $5 each
- Printers and scanners: $10 each
- Large appliances including washing machines and TVs: $20
- Fridges and heat pumps: $40
- Large photocopiers: $60
Payment can be made on site using either Eftpos or cash.
Items that will not be accepted include CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, all household and LED lightbulbs, gas bottles, medical equipment, glass, paint, garden waste, chemicals, and furniture.
In addition to providing a valuable recycling service, the event will also support a good cause, with donations being accepted for Variety – the Children’s Charity.
