Porirua is set to come alive from 19–23 May with a week of free activities for young people as part of Youth Week 2025. With one of the youngest populations in Aotearoa, the city is embracing this year’s theme, “Take Our Place – Whai Wāhitanga”, by hosting events that put rangatahi at the centre.
The nationwide theme was selected by young people and those who work alongside them, aiming to highlight youth voices and promote belonging.
“With about 35 per cent of Porirua residents aged 24 and under, one of our big priorities is to keep tamariki and rangatahi at the heart of this city,” said Mayor Anita Baker. “Porirua City is working with local youth-focused organisations such as Partners Porirua and the 502 to make these great events possible.”

Kicking off the week on Monday 19 May is a health-focused event at Te Whare Rangatahi o 502 in Cobham Court, starting at 1.30pm. Organised by Partners Porirua and the 502, the hauora afternoon will offer health and wellbeing activities, kai, and connection.
On Tuesday 20 May, rangatahi keen to make a difference can take part in the Rangatahi Voices for Change Workshop at Pātaka Art + Museum, from 10am to 3.30pm. Delivered by Te Whatu Ora, the Cancer Society, and the Regional Kai Network Advocacy Group, the workshop offers training in youth advocacy. Registration is essential.

Sporting action takes over Te Rauparaha Arena on Wednesday 21 May from 11.30am to 3.30pm. From traditional ball games to pool activities and manu competitions, the Sports Day promises something for everyone.

The festivities wrap up on Friday 23 May with a Jam Session at Cobham Court from 12pm to 4pm. Attendees can enjoy a free clothes swap, gaming and VR setups, live performances, basketball, market stalls, and a wide range of giveaways and prizes.
Youth Week is a nationwide celebration, but Porirua’s contribution reflects the city’s commitment to its vibrant, youthful community. For full details and event listings, visit poriruacity.govt.nz/youth-week.
