Social Services and Community Select Committee Chair Joseph Mooney and Ōtaki MP Tim Costley visited the Porirua Whānau Centre this month, gaining insight into the Centre’s trusted wrap-around services that support whānau across generations throughout the Wellington region.

Tumu Whakarae Liz Kelly said the visit was an opportunity to demonstrate the Centre’s integrated, long-term programmes aimed at community-led solutions.

“Our goal is always to wrap the right support around whānau, so they can move forward safely, confidently, and together,” Kelly said.

Among the key initiatives presented was Hapori, a partnership with Oranga Tamariki focused on preventing child uplifts. The programme strengthens home environments and empowers parents with tools, support, and cultural connection.

“Our team walks alongside whānau through incredibly challenging circumstances,” Kelly said. “Hapori helps them find a way forward that protects their tamariki while keeping whānau intact wherever possible.”

The Centre also highlighted its Transitional Housing Programme, which combines temporary accommodation with counselling, life-skills training, and support into permanent housing.

“It was inspiring to meet the team at the Porirua Whānau Centre,” Costley said. “We heard stories of lives changed, and new trajectories for people who thought hope was lost.”

Costley, who represents the Kāpiti and Mana area, said he would continue to support community efforts to make the region “the best place to grow up in New Zealand.”

The Centre also runs Non-Violence and Parenting Programmes, both designed to break cycles of harm and promote respectful, safe relationships at home.

“Every person who walks through our doors has the potential to thrive with the right support,” Kelly said. “Our programmes help make that possible.”
