Jon Shaw from the Porirua Club emerged victorious at the ‘Clubs New Zealand 2025 North Island Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament’ held over the weekend, bringing home top honours for his local club.
Shaw outlasted a competitive field of players from across the North Island to claim the title, showcasing both skill and composure in the fast-paced tournament.
The Porirua Club’s poker community is thriving, with regular games held every Tuesday evening. “Members, affiliated members and guests are most welcome,” said Gerard Mckenna, organiser of the Poker Adjunct. “We play Texas Hold’em in a turbo tournament format with re-buys and add-ons available.”
Registration begins at 7:15 pm and games typically run until 11 pm. Entry costs include a $30 buy-in with re-buy and add-on options available for $20 each. Attractive prizes are awarded weekly, and a 10-week seasonal league keeps the competitive spirit alive. Points are awarded based on finishing positions, with the top two players each season earning prizes. Seasonal jackpot prizes add further incentive.
