Porirua is set to dazzle this Matariki season, with a programme of events celebrating connection, culture, and community from Wednesday 18, to Saturday 28 June.
The harbourside will transform into a glowing walkway from 19–21 June, with firelight, buskers, and kai stalls lighting the way along Wi Neera Drive between 6 and 9pm. The Ka kā te Rama light walk on 19 June at 5.30pm will kick off the festivities, inviting residents to bring lanterns, fairy lights or torches and help illuminate the city.
Mayor Anita Baker says Matariki has quickly become a treasured fixture on Porirua’s calendar. “This long weekend has fast become an important time on our city calendar and I love how we gear up to celebrate life, give thanks and recognise our wonderful cultural diversity,” she said. “Each year it gets better.”
Te Rauparaha Arena will again host the popular “Matariki under the Stars” experience from 20–22 June and again on 28 June, offering performances, displays, and a shared space for reflection and joy. Special themed events include Elvis Under the Stars (21 June), Fitness Under the Stars (23 June), and a traditional hāngi on 26 June.
Pātaka Art + Museum will honour Matariki, the central star of the constellation, with activities focused on wellbeing and health, from yoga sessions and artist talks to live music.
Families can also enjoy a storytime and craft session with children’s book illustrator Joy Te Aho-White at the City Centre Library on 18 June from 11am to noon.
With something for everyone, Matariki in Porirua offers a chance to honour the past, celebrate the present, and look ahead to the future — all under a sky full of stars.
