Porirua Shines Bright During Matariki Celebrations

Porirua Shines Bright During Matariki Celebrations, 2025.

Porirua came alive over the past week and a half with a dazzling array of events to mark Matariki, drawing locals and visitors alike to celebrate the Māori New Year in style.

From 18 to 28 June, the city hosted a diverse lineup of activities honouring te wā o Matariki, a time for remembrance, reflection, and new beginnings. Highlights included light displays, interactive storytelling, community planting, fitness events, and delicious shared kai, all under the watchful eyes of the stars.

The festivities launched with Ka kā te Rama on 19 June, a new light walk event that saw families gather at Whitireia Polytechnic and parade along the harbourside, lighting up the waterfront with lanterns, fairy lights, and joy. The harbourside light installation, running until 21 June, was a standout attraction with glowing displays, fireside stories, buskers, and a variety of food stalls.

Te Rauparaha Arena played host to Matariki Under the Stars, an interactive indoor stargazing experience that ran across multiple days, immersing participants in stories of the stars through visuals and storytelling.

Whānau also took the opportunity to give back to the whenua at Whakatō i te wairua o Matariki on 20 June. Volunteers planted natives, picked up litter, and restored Bothamley Park, celebrating connection through kaitiakitanga and community mahi.

Fitness fans got moving with Fitness Under the Stars on 23 June, and music lovers flocked to Elvis Under the Stars on 21 June for a night of entertainment from tribute artist Che Orton.

A crowd favourite, Hāngi Under the Stars on 26 June, delivered a feast of traditional kai in a beautifully lit setting, blending culture and cuisine. Tickets sold out once again, a testament to the community’s enthusiasm for shared celebration.

Pātaka Art + Museum honoured the central star Matariki through a week of wellness events, including tai chi, yoga, artist talks, and live music, celebrating creativity and connection.

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker said the events captured the spirit of Matariki perfectly. “It’s a time for reflection, for remembering those who came before us, and for looking ahead together. Our community turned up, lit up, and made this year’s Matariki one to remember.”

From the first spark of light to the final bite of hāngi, Matariki in Porirua was a celebration of identity, community, and hope.
