Porirua came together this week to celebrate Kiribati Language Week with a vibrant flag-raising ceremony and cultural festivities that highlighted the richness of the Kiribati community.

Mayor Anita Baker, alongside members of the New Zealand Police, led the event, which was marked by a warm welcome from Mrs Ruuta Teburea and a heartfelt devotion delivered by Father Tikoua Kautu. The Honorary Consul of Kiribati, Mr Ben Otang, addressed attendees, followed by Denise Raiteta who shared this year’s theme:
“Living our valued cultural practices through love and respect upholds our dignity and growth for a successful future.”

The celebration, held in Porirua, drew a strong turnout from the local community, who enjoyed lively singing, traditional dancing, and a shared sense of cultural pride. The event underscored the importance of embracing cultural heritage and promoting unity through language and tradition.

Kiribati Language Week runs from 6 to 12 July 2025, with this year’s theme in te reo Kiribati:
‘Maiuakinan te katei ri nanon te tangira ma te ikarinerine bon wantongan te mwenga ibukin te rikirake’.

Resources including posters and social media graphics are available to help individuals and organisations join the celebrations and honour the Kiribati language and culture.
