Night Closures, Lane Changes Across Wellington Region Highways This Week

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi alerts drivers to upcoming state highway closures and lane changes across the Wellington region from 23–29 August 2025.

Motorists across the Wellington region should prepare for multiple highway disruptions this week, as planned roadworks are set to affect key state highway routes from 23 to 29 August.

On State Highway 1 in central Wellington, the Molesworth Street northbound on-ramp will be closed late Sunday night, 24 August, from 11.59pm to 3.30am for streetlight pole removal. Further north, Johnsonville’s southbound off-ramp will be closed Monday night, 25 August, from 9pm to 3am for fibre duct repairs.

PORIRUA:

Tawa’s Takapu Road off-ramps will see closures on both 27 and 28 August, from 10pm to 4.30am, as crews carry out asphalt resurfacing in both directions.

Transmission Gully commuters will experience altered lane layouts on Monday and Tuesday during the day (8.30am to 6pm) for patch resurfacing, while resurfacing works near Forest Lakes Road in North Ōtaki on Wednesday night (7pm to 4am) will be controlled with stop/go systems.

Further north, in North Manakau, O2NL infrastructure works will lead to daytime lane changes from 25 to 29 August. Night works in Kuku will also run from 24 to 28 August, with stop/go traffic management in place for drainage upgrades.

Along the old State Highway 1 in Ōtaki, motorists will face ongoing disruptions as part of the highway revocation project. From 25 to 29 August, stop/go systems will be in place near Riverbank Road during the day, while altered lane layouts will continue day and night near Waerenga Road and the Mill Road/Rahui Road roundabout.

All works are weather-dependent and may be rescheduled if conditions are unsuitable. Waka Kotahi urges drivers to plan ahead, follow posted detours, and allow for extra travel time through affected areas.
